I for one would like to hear more about how the tire pictured above resembles a Presbyterian. If obliged, I will in turn find a tire to represent my own Baptist background. And at that point, we'll just have to keep going and turn it into a whole new blog, adding new tires and explanations for every denomination, religion, and tradition in existence.

New blog readership: 2.

Gary,

I like the analogy. I think this argues against both sides of the coin. One side says, "Who needs theology? Just give me real life stuff (and basically, I don't have to think about anything)." The other says, "Theology. Theology. Theology." And studies it systematically to a fault.

I love the quote. A God that we can fit into our boxes (i.e., our systems) does not exist. Thus, we must keep coming back to our own understandings of God and reevaluate. Changing where we need to change, and always allowing room for mystery (which is something I'm a fan of).

This is brilliant.

A man will go to long lengths after a........cheesesteak. Problem for you is, what if the Phils are back in the playoffs next season and suddenly Ryan Howard is doing commercials endorsing something like, oh say, HD TVs? You might have to think a bit harder before taking an oath. But then again, this is Philly.

I would argue that today, today is Philly. That "you said we couldn't but now we did" attitude. We just need to keep the "we can do anything" feeling going.

The Scriptures do have have a lot to say regarding the poor and we need to teach and apply this in our congregations, communities, and personal lives.

I am in agreement though I realize that these are complicated matters. I appreciate the restraint that you show. It's easy to say that's all messed up and that capitalism is the evil, etc. (Greed is evil).
Anyway, you give an excellent summary and solid starting points.
Hope to read more.
